   Special thanks to Merry Shea, Jan Iler and Sylvia Pease for all their hard work setting up the exhibit at the fair this year.  It was brutally hot but the result was well worth it.  There are other interesting exhibits in the old Grange Hall as well and you will be able to purchase your quilt raffle tickets and take away an old fashioned recipe to try at home.  So, come to the fair and marvel at the skill, ingenuity and hard work of the local residents of the 19th century! 

UPDATE:  I have just learned that our exhibit won first prize again this year! Now you really have to see it!

Exhibit at the Ossipee Valley Fair

   The PPHS will be doing an exhibit at the Ossipee Valley Fair again this year.  Drawing on History House's collection of hand crafted items, the exhibit will showcase the various skills people living in the 19th and early 20th century needed to make necessary household items.

Sewing, spinning quilting, basket and barrel making, shoe making and even toys for the children, this was a time when you didn't run to the store for items you wanted or needed. You made them yourself!

Visitors to the exhibit in the old Grange building on the fairgrounds can try their hand at weaving and take home a recipe for a farm favorite to try.

You will also be able to purchase your quilt raffle tickets at the fair (and see the quilt displayed).  You won't want to miss the change of winning this handmade masterpiece!

A Stitch in Time

  This is a detail from the fabulous crazy quilt at History House.  One of the wonderful things you can see when you visit.  When was the last time you came to History House?  Isn't time for another visit?

   We had a a very successful opening of our current exhibit, Coming Home - 1865 on June 6th.  If you weren't able to make it that day there is one more open house planned for September 20, 2015.

   Raffle tickets are available for our beautiful quilt and we hope you will purchase some.  It is a major fund raiser for History House and we need to sell as many tickets as possible.  Proceeds from the raffle help us keep History House viable and allow us to conserve and exhibit all our fascinating artifacts.  Even if you aren't close enough to visit, your support through purchasing raffle tickets is much needed and greatly appreciated.  Tickets are 6 for $5.00 and you can sent a check with a phone number (so we can contact you when you win!) to:

"Coming Home" - New Exhibit Opens at History House

2015 marks the 150 anniversary of the end of the Civil War and History House is commemorating the event with an outstanding exhibition, "Coming Home".  Come and see how the war impacted Maine, learn about the role of photography in documenting the conflict and step into a parlor circa 1865 through artifacts on loan from the Civil War collection of author and PPHS vice-president, Lyn Sudlow.  In conjunction with this special exhibit, three exhibits will highlight the schools of Porter and Parsonsfield, the businesses of Kezar Falls and the hat shop of Florence Perkins.

 The exhibit opens on

 Saturday, 6 June 2015 from 1 - 4 pm.

The small town of Porter once had 13 school districts.

Most were one room school houses typical of the time. Dottie will show us pictures and

 tell us where they were located and will relate stories of what school was like in those days.

PPHS Opening Meeting

The Parsonsfield-Porter Historical Society opening meeting will be on Saturday 25 April 2015 at the Porter Town Hall at 1 pm.  Officers will be confirmed so it is important that we have a quorum. The society has several interesting events planned for this year, one of which involves the Blazo School House in Parsonsfield!  Come and find out more.  Hope to see you there.

Talk by Photographer Paul Wainwright

   Photographer Paul Wainwright will give a talk about Colonial meeting houses of New England on April 15, 2015 at 1:30 pm at the Camp Clumet Conference Center.  The talk will be held in the center's dining room.

   Wainwright is renowned for his beautiful black and white images of architectural facades, interiors and details.  This will be a very interesting talk.  Directions to the center:

Calumet is located on 1090 Ossipee Lake Road in Freedom literally on Ossipee Lake!  From Porter just take Route 25 to Rt 153. Turn right on 153.  Go a mile or so and turn left on the Ossipee Lake Road. Go about 5 miles and the Conference Center is on the right hand side of the road.
